Exercise
Tuesday, March 29th, 2005after reading my email i got this….
You need aerobic exercise and weight training to strengthen your heart, lungs, and muscles, improve your blood pressure and circulation, and lower your blood glucose. After you exercise, you’ll notice that your blood glucose is lower for 12 to 24 hours. How low depends on the length and intensity of your workout, your blood glucose level beforehand, and your fitness level. Some people notice higher blood glucose levels after exercise. This might happen because of a hormonal change in response to the exercise or because your blood glucose was high (more than 300) before you started. This is most commonly seen in people with type 1 diabetes who aren’t taking enough insulin.
People with type 2 diabetes should exercise at least every other day and, ideally, most days of the week. This helps control blood glucose, which could be higher on your more sedentary days and lower on your most active days. Drink water before, during, and after exercise. It helps keep you going. If hypoglycemia is a problem for you, work with your health care team to reduce your insulin or diabetes pills instead of eating too many snacks. This will keep your blood glucose from dropping too low (below 70) during or after exercise. Carry a snack in case you need one.
But Are You Really Hungry?
Tuesday, March 22nd, 2005If you feel like you’re constantly hungry, you might be confusing hunger with appetite. Hunger is a physiological response to the lack of food, and appetite is the desire to eat. Many things can trigger the desire to eat — even when you’ve just eaten. You can become easily conditioned to think of the desire to eat as hunger. If you find yourself feeling hungry but fairly picky about what you want to eat, ask yourself if it is truly hunger that you are feeling. On the other hand, if you try to cut calories by skipping meals, you’ll definitely feel hungry.
If you go on a very-low-calorie diet of less than 1,000 calories each day, you will feel very hungry much of the time. It is better for you to eat more calories each day — say 1,200 to 1,500 — for a slower but longer-term weight loss. In the long run, severely restricting calories can backfire, leaving you feeling constantly hungry and constantly wanting to eat. And no matter how much you cut back, you’ll eventually need to learn to eat at a higher calorie level to maintain your weight.
